Most brands will tell you to calculate the BTU you need based on the square footage of the room you're trying to cool. While that's not incorrect, there are some other factors to consider, too. The ceiling height, the amount of sunlight the room gets, and how many people are regularly in the space will all have an impact on the size requirement.
